The Assessment reveals that more than one in three tree species are threatened with extinction.
28 Oct. 2024 - The new IUCN Global Tree Assessment, released today at CBD COP16 in Colombia, reveals that of all tree species in the world, an astonishing 38% – more than one in three tree species – are threatened with extinction. For the first time, the majority of the world’s trees have been listed on the IUCN Red List, revealing that at least 16,425 of the 47,282 species assessed are at risk of extinction.
The main drivers are land use change, illegal logging, invasive pest species as well as climate change, especially in the tropics.
Fran Price, Leader, WWF Forest Practice, said: “IUCN’s Global Tree Assessment paints a shocking picture of the state of the world’s trees. Trees are invaluable allies in tackling climate change and a critical foundation of our natural world. The report is an eye-opening reminder that current efforts are falling short in safeguarding these vital natural assets. It’s time to take stronger action against illegal logging and trade and enact stronger laws that protect our trees.”
