The approval of the terms of reference for a new pilot programme for results-based payments by the GCF unlocks a new source of finance for REDD+ activities
At its eighteenth meeting, the Green Climate Fund Board approved the terms of reference for a new pilot programme, allocating USD 500 million for activities related to nature’s role in fighting climate change. These funds will be specifically dedicated to paying countries for verified emission reductions from REDD+ actions and will provide an important signal to countries that restoring and maintaining their forests generates financial benefits. Funding will be available to countries who meet all the requirements under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s (UNFCCC) Warsaw Framework for REDD+. This outcome unlocks a new source of finance for REDD+ activities that have achieved results and will advance the role of forests in delivering on global climate and sustainable development goals.
