Prioritizing the protection of grasslands and savannahs

Grasslands and savannahs are some of the world’s most diverse and productive ecosystems. They support a quarter of the global population, provide habitat for thousands of unique species, and play a critical role in climate regulation, food security, and cultural identity. Yet these landscapes are disappearing fast—converted, degraded, and undervalued.

This new report shines a spotlight on these overlooked ecosystems. It comes at a pivotal moment, ahead of the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists and the UNCCD COP17 in Mongolia. The report offers a roadmap for protecting, managing and restoring grasslands and savannahs—helping governments, businesses and communities take action to safeguard their future.

Why Grasslands and Savannahs Matter

These landscapes are more than just open spaces. They are foundational to human wellbeing. They provide food and water security, regulate climate, support pollinators, and offer medicinal resources, and are living systems that store carbon deep in the soil, regulate water flows, and support wildlife migrations that shape entire ecosystems. They are also home to pastoralist cultures, farmers, and Indigenous communities whose lives and traditions are deeply connected to the land.

Healthy grasslands mean resilient food systems, clean water, and thriving biodiversity. But with less than 10% protected and half already degraded, urgent action is needed.
