Bonn, Germany (12 June 2025) – As delegates convene in Bonn for the UN Climate Change Conference, WWF is calling on negotiators to lay the groundwork for COP30 in Belém, Brazil, to become a defining moment for global climate action. 
 

The Bonn talks are pivotal. They must generate the technical groundwork and political will be necessary to deliver meaningful outcomes at COP30 - especially in a year marked by intensifying climate impacts and growing geopolitical tensions. The findings of the 2023 Global Stocktake made it clear: current national climate plans are insufficient to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. Countries now have a crucial opportunity to course-correct by submitting more ambitious and aligned climate commitments ahead of COP30 in November. 
 

With 2024 seeing global temperatures surpass 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels - and communities around the world facing extreme heat, floods, droughts, and wildfires - the urgency to act has never been more pressing. 
 

Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, WWF Global Climate and Energy Lead and COP20 President, said: “The Paris Agreement is under unprecedented pressure. While we’ve made steady progress, it’s clear the pace must accelerate. Governments must be decisive in the way forward by rallying behind proven solutions, heeding science, providing finance, especially for the most vulnerable communities, and protecting nature. If we don’t act now, then we must brace for impact - the climate won’t wait.” 
 

WWF is calling on governments to demonstrate tangible progress in four key areas during the Bonn negotiations: 

• Submit enhanced national climate plans (NDCs) that reflect the Global Stocktake and close the emissions gap. 

• Agree on concrete measures to halt deforestation and ecosystem degradation. 

• Advance a just and equitable transition away from fossil fuels, with expanded deployment of renewables, improved energy efficiency, and universal energy access. 

• Strengthen support for communities to adapt and build resilience in the face of growing climate risks. 

Fernanda de Carvalho, WWF Global Climate and Energy Policy Lead, emphasised: “To keep 1.5°C within reach, we must confront the two main drivers of the climate crisis: fossil fuels and deforestation. Bonn must send clear signals on phasing out fossil fuels, scaling up renewable energy, and halting ecosystem loss - in line with the Global Stocktake. We also need concrete steps on adaptation and finance. People and nature must be at the core of this transition. COP30 must be the moment we change course - and Bonn must prove the world is ready."
