Mondi Group and WWF are working together in partnership to promote environmental stewardship in the packaging and paper sector.

In 2014, following many years of collaboration, Mondi Group and WWF launched a global partnership to promote responsible forestry and a sustainable pulp and packaging sector. In 2017, this global partnership was extended for another three years. In 2018, Mondi joined WWF business initiative Climate Savers and committed to science-based targets to keep global warming below 2 degrees Celsius.

Focusing on deforestation, water scarcity and climate change, together we are developing innovative approaches that will help Mondi meet customer needs while reducing impacts on the environment.

What we've achieved so far

  • Boreal Forest Platform - we co-founded and developed the Boreal Forest Platform in Russia focused on the sustainable increase of yields in secondary forests and reducing pressure on pristine forests

  • 78,000 hectares protected - in north-west Russia, we secured agreements with forestry companies to prevent logging in over 120,000 hectares of high conservation value forest

  • 150,000 hectares certified - in Bulgaria, we supported over 150,000 hectares of state forest to achieve Forest Stewardship Council certification

  • Water stewardship - in South Africa, we promoted water stewardship with key agricultural sectors (dairy, sugar) and forestry companies at a river catchment scale

  • Sustainable wood use - we produced a report on the 'Cascading Use of Wood', exploring policies and incentives to encourage optimal reuse and recycling of wood-based products

  • Water Risk Filter - Mondi supported the further development of the WWF Water Risk Filter tool for the packaging and paper sector questionnaire

  • Sustainable paper production - Mondi participated in WWF’s biennial Environmental Paper Company Index (EPCI) in packaging and Check Your Paper database

  • Responsible product development - WWF provided input on setting the criteria for responsible products under Mondi’s Green Range

What we'll do next

In the second phase of our partnership, we continue to focus on stewardship of forests (including forestry plantations), climate, energy and freshwater – both in Mondi’s own operations and through engaging others. Our work is organised around three areas:

  • Ecosystem stewardship - transforming the forest sector in north-west Russia through the Boreal Forest Platform, strengthening the management of freshwater resources in South Africa through the WWF-Mondi Water Stewardship Partnership, promoting responsible forest management in Bulgaria

  • Manufacturing stewardship - taking a lead on climate change by identifying long-term emissions reduction measures to contribute to keeping global temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius, and addressing water risk by meeting public commitments and targets set through the CEO Water Mandate

  • Product stewardship - working to enhance responsible sourcing of wood via active cooperation with credible forest certification schemes, and exploring risk-based approaches and locally relevant solutions that deliver real benefits for people and biodiversity
