Moldova takes over International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River Presidency for 2020 from Hungary

Moldova sets cooperation with the agricultural sector on reducing its impact on freshwater among its chief goals.
31 January 2020 (Vienna) - The passing of a bottle of Danube water in the Hungarian Embassy in Vienna marked the handover of the presidency of the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR) from Hungary to Moldova. The Danube is the world's most international river basin and the ICPDR its most international and diverse basin commission.

As Moldova takes over the annual Presidency of the ICPDR, incoming President Dorin Andros highlighted cooperation with the agricultural sector on reducing its impact on freshwater systems among the chief goals and highest priorities for his term. WWF, which holds observer status to the ICPDR, much welcomes this focus as it is promoting a shift of EU funds towards agricultural land use practices in line with the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD). This includes, for example farming on areas where wetland restoration has taken place, or nature-based solutions to mitigate drought impact.

Other specific concerns of the incoming Moldovan Presidency include involvement in the EU Strategy for the Danube Region, especially in the strategy’s Priority Areas PA 4 (Water Quality) and PA 6 (Biodiversity and Landscape). Sturgeon conservation is a joint focus and area of cooperation with WWF.

WWF welcomes the engagement of Moldova in regional cooperation on freshwater and hopes it will help the advancement of the national freshwater conservation agenda as well. There is significant potential for wetland restoration, for example at Beleu Lake, with significant benefits for nature and people.
