A global multi-stakeholder initiative, the RTRS aims to develop and promote responsible soy production, processing and trading.
The first General Assembly of the newly established Round Table on Responsible Soy (RTRS)
will take place on 8-9 May in São Paulo, Brazil. A global multi-stakeholder initiative, the RTRS aims to develop and promote responsible soy production, processing and trading worldwide.
Soy is one of the fastest growing industries in Latin America. Global demand, mainly from China and the EU, is expected to increase by 60 per cent in the next 20 years. While its production is a major source of income in several countries, the extensive cultivation also brings about huge ecological and social costs.
The RTRS was founded as a civil association under Swiss Law in November 2006, following the 2nd roundtable conference on soy in Asunción, Paraguay. Initiated by WWF and other stakeholders, the RTRS currently has 30 members.
This first meeting of the RTRS, under its new legal status, will take forward the process of developing principle and criteria for the sustainable production of soy and elect its Executive Board.
