As part of the cooperation between WWF Switzerland and the Swiss retailer Coop, the Basel Criteria for Responsible Soy Production have been developed by the consultancy ProForest.

The criteria address several issues such as legal compliance, environmental criteria, forest conversion and workers’ rights. Verification of compliance with the criteria is to be carried out by independent bodies. 

Within the global roundtable process on sustainable soy, criteria for a sustainable soy production will be defined. The Basel Criteria will serve as an input to this international  process.

In addition, a Brazilian interpretation of the Basel Criteria has been elaborated with the input from two stakeholder workshops held in November in Brazil.
