WWF-Mongolia and MAVA Foundation co-implement a project. Under this project, WWF-Mongolia grants financial supports to the local herders and herder communities those demonstrate successful practices on sustainable natural resource use for livelihood improvement. Selection of these individuals and community groups is run based on proposals of local government authorities. Recently, the best candidates were announced and awarded with a prize “Green Card” on a public event “Stakeholder Inputs to Darvi Soum Development” held in Darvi soum of Khovd aimag.
The prize winners are one herder, one herder community, and two cooperatives those are making their contributions in local green development and natural resource and biodiversity protection and sustainable use while improving their livelihoods. The prize “Green Card” allows its winners to implement their projects with grants.
One of the winners of “Green Card” is D. Ouyntsetseg, who has been a herder for 27 years. She has been making her contribution in pastureland protection by reducing numbers of the goats, whose high populations often lead to overgrazing, from year to year in her herds of livestock. She makes dairy products by using a solar energy source and sells them in the aimag (province) and soum in summers and makes the Mongolian boots and handmade products in winters. She is able to regularly earn additional incomes from these her seasonal businesses.
The prize winners-cooperatives and herder communities sew and sell reusable cloth/fabric bags in order to reduce use of the plastic bags those are released and dumped into the environment without recycling.  These community based organizations and their members also build livestock exclosure around heads of natural springs, repair water wells, and improve their livelihoods through their joint efforts for sustainable natural resource use.
