It was a privilege to have known, worked with, and learned from Mingma and Chandra for more than twenty years. They were extraordinary people and conservationists. They will have a lasting place in the history of Himalayan conservation for their accomplishments with community-based conservation in Annapurna Conservation Area and in Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) National Park and Buffer Zone.

It was fitting that they were together in Ghunsa on behalf of WWF to mark the handing over of management authority in Kanchenjunga Conservation Area to local communities and to celebrate the establishment of Nepal’s first indigenously-managed protected area.

I hope that their example and their loss will inspire many of us to redouble our efforts on behalf of linking conservation, communities, and respect for both indigenous peoples and nature. I send my deepest condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of all the conservationists who perished in the catastrophe last Saturday. It was a dark day for Nepal, global conservation, and for all of us.

Last time when I was in Baluwatar, the office of WWF, I wished to meet Dr.Chandra Gurung. But, I couldn't. My wish remained unfulfilled. It is really a great loss to the country, the ethnic society of Nepal, and the conservation organisations. This loss of such intellectuals of our country cannot be filled at any cost. We are very unlucky to face this great loss. I offer my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. May the God give them strength and courage to tackle this tragic moment.

Gurung Ritesh, Ktm, Nepal

I have the greatest respect for all of you at WWF for the work you do to protect our wildlife, and consequently our planet. We don't hear enough about the special people who do so much good in this world - the quiet heroes who work behind the scenes with such dedication. I did not know the people you have lost so tragically, but I feel the weight of their loss as though I did know them. Sincere condolences to the families and to you all. Thank you for the wonderful work you do.
