I’ve been deeply shocked and extremely upset since the weekend when I heard of the helicopter crash and the loss of so many lives including Dr Chandra Gurung, Mingma Norbu Sherpa, Dr Tirtha Maskey and Dr Narayan Poudel. I had known Mingma, Dr Gurung and Dr Maskey for over 20 years and find it extremely hard to believe they are gone now.

As well as being key figures in nature conservation in Nepal, they had of course many years of experience in working in community-based conservation with local people. They were wise, humorous, totally committed, innovative and towers of strength. In their work they seemed to complement each other’s qualities. I wish so much I could be in Nepal and join in the memorial occasion tomorrow.

I feel the best long term memorial for them is to ensure that their work in Nepal conservation goes on, especially their work with local communities in conservation. Surely this is what they would have wished. Thinking of them, their families and all at WWF Nepal and DNPWC at this time. My husband Tim joins me in sending his condolences. Heartfelt wishes.

In one event of fate, not only have I lost several personal friends from conservation scene in Nepal but most of all the nation suffered an irrepairable loss. "This great loss to the country cannot be compensated even after long time. Just think on who, from those killed in this tragedy, can be replaced. Can Dr. Chandra Gurung or Dr. Harka Gurung or Dr. Tirthaman Maskey or Mingma Sherpa or Bigyan Acharya or Sharad Rai or Yesi Lama be replaced? Their office chair will be occupied in no time by others, but who can occupy the place that these great souls have made in the hearts of the people they were associated with. This tragedy has taken away all the experts with so much down to earth approach."
