I am deeply saddened by the loss of life, talent and conservation leadership suffered in the tragic helicopter accident in Nepal on September 23rd. On behalf of all at the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, I wish to offer my deepest sympathy to the friends, family and colleagues of those who were lost.

The loss of these gifted conservation friends and colleagues from WWF, USAID, the Government of Nepal and the Government of Finland is a huge blow for biodiversity conservation in Nepal and the world. The fact that the deceased were returning from a ceremony to hand over the management of a rich protected area to local communities stands as a lasting reminder of their fine work.

These farsighted and successful conservation leaders were role models for us all and were instrumental in the success of the ongoing tiger conservation efforts we support, and will continue to support, in Nepal. The community-based conservation model pioneered by this group of people will provide a long-term legacy for the forests and wildlife of South Asia. We regret the passing of these friends and colleagues.

Jeff Trandahl, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation & Save The Tiger Fund

"The tragedy came as a deep shock to all of us who had personally known some of these highly distinguished people. I offer my most sincere condolences to the families and friends to all of the deceased. Nepal and the whole world have suddenly lost many truly remarkable conservationists, whose visionary and tireless work has resulted in great achievements in the well-being of both nature and people."

"I have personally had the great priviledge to work together with Dr. Chandra Prasad Gurung, whose warmth, empathy and optimism, combined with his highly distinguished diplomatic skills, visionary intellect and true commitment, were a great source of inspiration to me and many others."

"I also had the great pleasure of personally knowing Dr. Tirtha Man Maskey, Ms. Yeshi Choden Lama, and Mr. Pauli Mustonen, all of whom I admired as people with sincere commitment, distinguished expertise, and truly warm hearts. I will treasure their memory in my own heart and do my best in continuing to work for the causes they believed in."

"We lost your leaders, supporters of conservation in Nepal and the pioneers folks in conservation history of Nepal, who had done marvellous job in the field of conservation and natural resource management. I remember, in 1995, I have visited ACAP with professors (Lincoln university New Zealand) and came to know the hard work of Chandra, Migma and his colleagues in the early days of conservation efforts in ACAP."

"I salute these people for their dedication for harmonizing the conservation and well being of local people in Hills of Nepal and making the dream comes true. It is an irreparable loss for conservation efforts in Nepal. Dr. Parajuli has great interest in Medicinal plants and its sustainable management to fight the hunger in the hills of Nepal."

"Similarly, I knew, Dr. Acharya, Dr. Maskey, Mr. Rai and Mr. Poudyal as colleagues and seniors.Their hard work and commitment for better work will be remembered for long time in Nepal. This will be one of the most unfortunate events in the history of conservation and partnership between GO and I/NGO for promotion of livelihood in Nepal. May god give enough courage to the family, relatives and friends to bear such an event."
Nirmal Subedi

We extend our deepest sorrow to family, friends, colleagues, and all those in WWF for the recent tragedy in Nepal. We have worked together for over seven years with WWF (a founder member of BCTF) and know that it comprises many remarkable and talented individuals who share a vision and passion for life on earth.

To have so many lives so rapidly lost in such a tragic way at a moment of such conservation collaboration triumph is a profound loss for Nepal, WWF and the planet. Our thoughts, prayers, and hearts go out to all those who have lost loved ones in this tragedy. Their lives were dedicated to a noble cause and they contributed to creating a better world for us all. We re-dedicate ourselves to continuing to support their vision for improved life on earth.
