I had the pleasure of briefly knowing Yeshi Lama before my studies in the Kanchenjunga region in 1999. She was of great help in making contacts, getting clarity on my research questions, and feeling comfortable in Kathmandu. These vivid memories in contrast with the relative brevity and sizeable time elapse since our meeting should be indicative of the effect she had on not just me but several others over the course of her life. It is no doubt that she and the other champions for a better world will be greatly missed. Namaskar, Yeshi.

"The loss of each person is a terrible tragedy for the family. You all are in our thoughts today. The sanctuary they saved is a living memorial to their lives. But the loss of so many so sincerely dedicated to preserving the environment affects more than their immediate families. This is global loss, a global grief. Each 'thing' they sought to preserve - creature and tree, mountain and ocean - grieves along with with the bereaved families. May our future work be a worthy memorial to their lives. Namaste."

Today began in a heartbreaking fashion on my way to work; CBC reported the loss of 24 of your workers in a helicopter crash in Nepal. Words cannot express how sorry I am for your loss of such heroes. They were better people than I could ever aspire to be; they will never be forgotten. Please remember that though this is such a disaster and tragedy for WWF, there will someday be peace for you and for the family members of Chandra Gurung, Mingma Norbu Sherpa, Harka Gurung, Yeshi Lama, Jill Bowling Schlaepfer, Jennifer Headley and Matthew Preece, and the rest of the crew. I grieve for you. Thank you for the work that you do.
