WWF statement on UNESCO World Heritage Committee decision on Selous Game Reserve

Posted on 02 July 2019

Commenting on the UNESCO World Heritage Committee’s decision on Selous Game Reserve, Aslihan Tumer, Head of Campaigns at WWF-International, said:

“The Selous is one of the world’s most precious places. Home to globally important populations of elephants, hippos and African hunting dogs, it provides livelihoods and a wealth of ecosystem services to local communities. Further, it holds great potential to contribute to Tanzania’s economy through sustainable tourism.

“WWF strongly supports calls from the IUCN and World Heritage Centre to protect this incredible wilderness area from damage. Natural and mixed World Heritage sites such as the Selous are currently under threat like never before – most notably harmful industrial activities. It is essential that they are provided the necessary protections.

“This World Heritage Committee decision rightly highlights the threats the Selous currently faces. We now need to see urgent action to ensure this unique site continues to be safeguarded for future generations.”

The UNESCO World Heritage Centre’s draft decision on Selous Game Reserve, published 19 June 2019, is available here. The World Heritage Committee’s final decision was taken today at the Committee's 43rd session, taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan, 30 June – 10 July.
