Green Lizard (Lacerta viridis), Lake Kagul, Ukraine
The lower Danube river basin is also home to 18 amphibian species.
The green lizard is a splendid reptile of up to 40 cm in length, two thirds of this length consisting of its tail. The males are an especially attractive brilliant green colour with black flecks.
With regard to its feeding habits, the green lizard hunts mainly on invertebrate animals, although on occasions it eats birds' eggs, small mammals and sun-lizards, which it captures with great speed and agility.
