Lesser flamingo (Phoenicopterus minor) in Lake Bogoria, Rift Valley, Kenya

Occasionaly over 1 million flamingoes congregate here at Lake Bogoria, Rift Valley Province, Kenya.

Lake Bogoria has been designated as Wetland of International Importance: an alkaline soda lake hydrologically dominated by hot springs, the lake provides critical refuge for the lesser flamingo ( Phoenicopterus minor), with a population of 1 to 1.5 million, and has high biodiversity values for more than 300 waterbird species.

Lesser flamingos are filter-feeders with a bill and mouth specially designed to extract large algae from the surface of the lakes.
