Lobster claw or Red palulu (Heliconia bihai), from the zingerberaceae family, French Guiana

This magnificent heliconia can be found abundantly in the tropical rainforest of the Guianas. It is growing to 12' high. The bracts are light-to dark red with a yellow edge and a green top. The seeds are formed in these bracts and are shiny violet. The pollination is done by hummingbirds and bats. Heliconia is a group of frost-tender perennials grown for their attractive foliage and brilliant flower spikes. Also beautiful as a cutflower; it will last up to three weeks in water.
