Climate Change effects are already being felt in Uganda, from the landslides to the prolonged drought in different parts of the country. To help raise awareness on the Climate Change effects, Geoffrey Ayeni Walker and his colleague Okello Quirino embarked on a 260 walk from Kampala to Kapchorwa which they covered in 12 days.

The walkers were congratulated by the Minister of Water and Environment, Sam Cheptoris who said, “What Ayeni and his friends have done is a noble duty. Climate change is with us and it’s a reality. The world is getting warmer and it’s because of human actions.”

In just 12 days, Geoffrey Ayeni and his colleagues were able to plant and distribute over 3500 tree seedlings of mahogany, grevillea, prunus Africana and delonix regia among others.

“After this walk I’m calling upon the population not only in Uganda but globally, to join us in tree planting because that’s one of the ways we can preserve our environment,” says Geoffrey Ayeni.

The World Wide Fund for Nature Uganda Country Director, David Duli was amazed by the climate change walk initiative, “It’s a turning point for Ugandans because it’s the first time we are getting a serious commitment from an individual to take action. “

David also called upon the Ministry of Water and Environment, National Forestry Authority, the district officials and other well-wishers to embrace renewable energy technologies like solar, biogas and improved cook stoves.

The climate change walk climaxed with a tree planting ceremony at the Kapchorwa District head offices that saw several district officials, the Minister of Water and Environment, WWF Uganda Country Director and other members participate in the activity.

Geoffrey Ayeni who is a social advocate, specializing in charity and awareness walks on issues affecting the society thanked WWF, National Forest Authority, Ministry of Water and Environment, the different district officials for supporting and giving him morale.
