Enforcement Support Coordinator
TRAFFIC, the wildlife trade monitoring network, works to ensure that trade in wild animals and plants is not a threat to the conservation of nature. We actively monitor and investigate wildlife trade and provide information to diverse audiences worldwide as a basis for effective conservation policies and programmes. TRAFFIC is a strategic alliance of World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and is an international network, organised into six regional programmes.
This position will be responsible for managing the TRAFFIC database and ensuring the ongoing collection and global collation of TRAFFIC data on illegal goods movements; ensuring these data, received from a wide variety of sources, are entered into the specialist software system; and carrying out analyses of the data as time allows. The position will also line manage the data entry assistant role.
- Managing and administering TRAFFIC’s database;
- Ensuring TRAFFIC’s information collection, storage and dissemination is compliant under the UK Data Protection Act 1998;
- Planning and implementing security measures to safeguard the database;
- Ensuring information is being entered correctly, carrying out data quality control and ensuring information is retained correctly;
- Assessing regional capacity for information collection and identifying where gaps exist, and looking at ways to address those gaps;
- Managing database configuration(s) including installing and upgrading software servers and application tools;
- Ensuring backup and recovery plans for the database are sufficient and are tested regularly;
- Implementing recovery procedures when necessary;
- Ensuring that database problems are investigated, diagnosed and resolved, referring to database users, other staff and suppliers as necessary.
- Setting standards across the network for data collection and ensuring templates and guidelines are kept up to date;
- Developing training tools and providing training for staff engaged in activities including data entry, analysis and related topics;
- Working with colleagues to progress data input into the database;
- Working with regional staff and dedicated project managers to compile information required for donor reporting, project metrics, and other project deliverables;
- Carrying out routine audits and gap assessments to improve targeting of further data collection efforts.
Full Requirements / Expectations of the Role holder
- Carrying out robust analyses of factors influencing the location, scale, modus operandi and other characteristics of poaching and illegal trade, and the effectiveness of associated enforcement efforts at a regional and local level;
- Working with regions to ensure analytical standards are operational and are consistent across the network and provide training where necessary;
- Developing indicators to measure the impact of our work;
- Supporting the development of methodologies for background economic data gathering in subsidiary databases (on law enforcement effort, governances, etc.) to support data analysis and interpretation of results.
- Must be eligible to live and work in the UK;
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a related subject;
- Several years of experience with the collection, collation and analysis of data, ideally in the wildlife sector;
- Experience of database management;
- Strong experience of database software. Experience with i2 software is desirable;
- Excellent IT skills, particularly in Excel;
- Experience and awareness of UK data protection rules and regulations;
- An eye for detail and a keen interest and ability to recognise connections between data;
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively as part of a diverse team as well as independently, with respect for and sensitivity to multi-cultural approaches;
- Familiarity with and an interest in conservation, particularly trade issues;
- Fluency in English with excellent English writing skills, other languages an advantage.
