Protected areas are the best known mechanism to conserve ecosystems and the services they provide.

The report State of the Amazon: Ecological representation in Protected Areas and Indigenous Territories brings an evolution of the network of protected areas in the Amazon from 1960 to 2013, the importance of the Amazon natural ecosystems for indigenous peoples and other local communities and presents an analysis of the ecological representation of those areas and their contribution to Aichi Targets.
