MEXICO CITY -. World Wildlife Fund (WWF) urged President Enrique Peña Nieto to permanently protect Cabo Pulmo reef and its contiguous land area to ensure the conservation of this unique marine reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

"WWF welcomes the announcement that the Chinese-US investors have withdrawn the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the “Cabo Dorado” project and thus decided not to pursue this massive and unsustainable development, as it had major scientific and technical deficiencies. However, definite long-term measures need to be taken - such as protecting the land surrounding Cabo Pulmo and making it part of a buffer zone for Cabo Pulmo National Park – for the benefit of the local communities and present and future generations of Mexicans”, said Omar Vidal, CEO of WWF in Mexico.

“Cabo Dorado” was the third attempt to create an unsustainable tourist development in Cabo Pulmo in recent years. Ten scientific independent analyses carried out of the EIA by universities and specialized institutions, supported by more than 1,500 scientists and conservationists, showed that this massive development will not only affects Cabo Pulmo, but will also negatively impact the local communities and their economies (http://cabopulmoinfo.wordpress.com).

Cabo Pulmo National Park is a marine reserve of 17,571 acres, home to the best-preserved reef in the Mexican Pacific, which that has allowed the return of migratory species such as whale sharks, manta rays, humpback whales and sea turtles.

"The Administration of President Peña Nieto has the opportunity to promote a development model that combines the creation of jobs along with the conservation of Mexico’s natural heritage. This will be in line with the President’s sustainability vision that he has promoted since the beginning of his mandate", added Vidal.
