Cape Town gains Earth Hour Capital 2014 award
The South African city took bold steps to move away from fossil fuels towards renewable energy with a solar water heating programme and stands out as a role model for the global South with green actions other cities can replicate. Over 160 cities from 14 countries joined the competition, which looked at each city’s ambition and innovation for low carbon development in the local context. The cities joined in support of WWF’s Seize Your Power pledge calling for a shift of investments from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. Over 300,000 people around the world voiced their support for renewable energy in the 160 finalist cities through the social media platform We Love Cities.
