Karuing, a village around Sebangau National Park, located in District Katingan, Central Kalimantan planned to make not less than 30 hectares of its region into a forest village. “This desire occurs because the village has the needs of availability raw materials wood for construction process,” said Andi Liany, the Headman of Karuing Village. Long time ago, this area was utilized for many forest timber, either by companies or communities to build a house. Because the exploited in excess, in the era of the late 80s the area affected forest fires during the dry season. As a result, dozens of hectares of the forest area, in fact, could be a source of food for many fish that live in the area, just now only a stump wood burn scars left. The fish were hard to come by, barren landscape extended in front of the eyes.
Such a condition and a concern of wood supply for the Karuing Village’s development in the future, and based on the community decision, Andi Liany collaborated with The Head Office Sebangau National Park and WWF Indonesia did reforestation some of his territory. “We hope in the future, the village had a guarantee of nattural resources from the forest village,” state the chief, Lili. To ensure that there will be no forest and land fire again, forest village will be set up in the village regulation. In village regulation will be delivered when a tree could be cut down, in what purposes, and who cut down the tree. “The regulation will also be created through the process of deliberation and consensus with the rest of the citizens”.

The roots of trees can be a source of food, and forest cover could be a good habitat for the process of fish reproduction in the seeds of fish captured into ready to eat. Newtrees programme with scheme is believed can bring many benefits. “From the public interest they would have forest village, from the environmental side guarantee that won’t happen forest fire disaster, and for the National Park management will reduce a threat of the encroachment natural resources in national park area”.
