Coal mine proposal for Last Ice Area withdrawn

Posted on 20 December 2013
A company that proposed exploration for the purpose of developing a coal mine on Ellesmere Island in the Canadian high Arctic has formally withdrawn its application after WWF and other organizations made arguments against the project to a government body.

The proposed development was in the heart of the Last Ice Area, an area of persistent summer sea ice that WWF has made a focus of its work for the past two years. As ice across the rest of the Arctic is projected to melt by 2040, a fringe of ice is projected to remain around northern Canada and Greenland providing a potential refuge for ice-adapted life.
