The Earth Hour, an ongoing global environmental campaign against climate change was successfully celebrated in western Mongolia. Actually, the Khovd people are celebrating the event in the fourth year and it has become one of important community outreach events in the aimag (province). The Earth Hour-2014 held on the aimag’s central square were attended by about 2000 residents. During the lights turning off, children and youth showed performances: dancing and singing songs that amused its participants. Interesting and eye-catching shows for the participants were a flash mob by about 200 children and a demonstration of bicyclists-school teachers and children who are aligned for the Earth Hour. A highlight of this year’s event was the young childrens in the Spider-Man’s clothes. The Spider-Man was the global campaign’s ambassador for Earth Hour-2014. Children called up the Khovd people to be a super hero for the planet while delivering environmental messages to the audience. The Khovd people have already acknowledged about importance of the global campaign and were willing to contribute their inputs and do something practical.
The people around the world regard that the Earth Hour should not be limited by an hour, but it should be open and continued for the whole year. Informed this approach to the Khovd people, Altai Sayan office of WWF Mongolia Programme Office has decided to implement a project “The Earth Hour and Green Khovd”. The project initiator announced that the project will be implemented with specific inputs and contributions of the Khovd people and started a volunteer donation campaign. As they planned, the campaign will be continued until May 1. With the donations by the Khovd people, the project initiator plans to plant trees and seedlings in the town in the month (May) and organize “Green Forum” for local young generations.
