“Association of Onon River CBO’s” held its first board meeting this reporting period. Ms.D.Munguntsooj, who was closely involved in forming and strengthening of CBOs in the Onon river basin since years, has been selected as the head of the association through open voting. In order to establish this association in spring last year, much of efforts was made: meeting and selecting the Community-based Organizations, building teams, helping them to elaborate project proposals targeting at different donors, and evaluating CBO’s environment protection activities. The association’s purpose is to help CBOs in sustainably managing the natural resources and improving the livelihood of households. In 2014 the association plans to carry out two major tasks: first of all, 125 CBOs have decided to set up community fund through collecting MNT100000 (USD60) from each CBO and create a company based in Dadal soum and secondly, they plan to produce bottled drinking water titled “Onon” targeting at local market. Moreover, the association considers the possibility of processing the timber leftovers, packaging and selling for additional income generation. If implemented, this would not only generate income, but also help forest regeneration.
