October of each year marks the celebration of Community-based organizations in ASER Mongolia, the initiative taken by WWF long ago and now successfully taken over by local authorities and other agencies. This year, over 60 members from 18 CBOs of Khovd and Gobi-Altai aimags have gathered to celebrate their annual successes and assess their failures. The “Sulin denj” cooperative from Khukhmorit soum was ranked among the best along with “Tungalag” CBO from Tugrug soum, and a CBO from Sharga soum, the places that are identified as hot spots for Saiga and wildlife poaching. The feature and main improvement for this year was that most of the CBOs have come together in a cooperative to join efforts for broader and more precise opportunities.
The governor of Khovd aimag, the former WWF-Mongolia staff, has supported the participation in the international festival on felt, in Khovd October of 2013. Over 80 participants to the festival have initiated and created an association of felt product makers titled “Oirad Chanz” where our felt makers became members of the board. Moreover, herders were invited to take part of Felt Festival to be held in Gorni Altai and Tuva in recognition of their quilted felt product, traditional Western Mongolian ornament and the art of felt making.
