Bolivia is a leader in voluntary forest certification under the FSC label, with 2,042,856 million hectares of forest under sustainable management. However, Bolivia annually looses 290,000 hectares of forest due to illegal logging and deforestation. 75% of this deforestation takes place in the department of Santa Cruz.
Declared by the Municipal Government of Santa Cruz de la Sierra through Ordinance Nº 026/06 on June 7th, 2006.
Santa Cruz de la Sierra is the capital of the department and holds the largest extension of certified forest under the FSC label in Bolivia, which is the leading country in certified tropical forest with over two million hectares.
FSC certified forests ensure the protection of water, soil, flora and fauna. They also promote the participation of communities, indigenous people, and forestry workers, industry and forestry producers in forest management, allowing people to continue living, working and obtaining income from forests.
