Conservation of Leopard in the Southern Caucasus (Armenia & Azerbaijan)

Project Description:
This project is intended to pursue the general objective to ensure the increase of endangered leopard (Panthera pardus ciscaucasica) populations as an indicator of improved conservation, strengthened environmental management and stabilized ecosystem processes in the Caucasus. The main target areas are southern Armenia (from Khosrov Forest State Reserve to the Armenian-Iranian state border), south-western Azerbaijan (Nakhichevan Republic) and south-eastern Azerbaijan (Talysh Mts.).

Long-term goal:
Ensure the conservation and sustainable management of viable meta-populations of leopard and wild prey and their habitats and build sustainable coexistence mechanisms with local communities across the Caucasus ecoregion.

Objective(s):
  • Reduce illegal activities outside of protected areas and assess compensation measures to mitigate human leopard conflicts and implement in model cases.
  • Enhance capacity of the protected areas in the southern Armenia
  • Engage target villages in complementary community development activities.
  • Enhance monitoring of the leopard and its prey species in the target region, as well as produce leopard corridor maps and establish the corridor.
  • Raise awareness of public about the leopard conservation.

Project Expected Deliverables:
  1. Leopard Caretakers network is established and successfully operating in the target areas.
  2. Compensation mechanisms for mitigation of the human-wildlife conflict in the target areas are developed.
  3. Anti-poaching activities are initiated, ongoing and enforced through enhancement of capacity and technical support for the Environmental inspectorate in Vayots Dzor and Syunik provinces.
  4. Capacity of the protected areas in the southern Armenia is strengthened and law enforcement is improved.
  5. Small-scale community development projects in the target villages are implemented.
  6. Population monitoring through field surveys and camera-trapping to have up-to-date information about the state of populations of concerned species are implemented.
  7. Biological and socio-economic assessments and modelling exercises for identification of leopard corridor are carried out. The corridor is mapped and established.
  8. Awareness campaigns and educational activities are organized.
