Conservation of Leopard in the Southern Caucasus (Armenia, Georgia & Azerbaijan)

Project Description:
This project is intended to pursue the general objective to ensure the increase of endangered leopard (Panthera pardus) populations as an indicator of improved conservation, strengthened environmental management and stabilized ecosystem processes in the Caucasus. The main target areas are southern Armenia (from Khosrov Forest State Reserve to the Armenian-Iranian state border), south-western Azerbaijan (Nakhichevan Republic) and south-eastern Azerbaijan (Talysh Mts.) and eastern Georgia (Vashlovani and Tusheti national parks). The special emphasis is on protected areas.

Objective(s):
To ensure the increase of endangered leopard (Panthera pardus) populations as an indicator of improved conservation, strengthened environmental management and stabilized ecosystem processes in the Caucasus.

Project Expected Deliverables:
  1. Population monitoring through field surveys and camera-trapping to have up-to-date information about the state of populations of concerned species
  2. Anti-poaching activities are initiated, ongoing and enforced with set-up of roadblocks and road signs (completed)
  3. Anti-poaching unit is established, equipped and functioning in the region (completed)
  4. The Leopard Conservation Strategy and Action Plan in Armenia is developed and got positive feedback from the state authority (completed)
  5. The awareness-raising Conservation Champion Campaign in communities is organized (completed)
