Caucasus Ecoregion Project
Project Description:
The project is implemented in 5 countries of the Caucasus ecoregion - Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Russia and Turkey. It contributes to implementation of the Programme of Work on Protected Areas (PoWPA) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), including a variety of activities connected with the field of protected areas (PA). They include legislative and institutional gap analysis and recommendations, assessment of management effectiveness and capacity needs of protected areas and action planning, financial needs assessment and sustainable financial planning, communication activities, implementation of priority activities under the PoWPAs and others.

Objective:
Parties to the CBD from the Caucasus Ecoregion are enabled to achieve the 2010/2012 targets of the PoWPAs, including scientifically based and representative systems of well managed PAs, sustainable financing and effective participation of local communities.

Objective:

Project Activities:
- establishment and running of National Coordination Committee to ensure delivery of priority targets of PoWPA at national level
- identification of legislative and institutional gaps in the field of PAs
- assessments of management effectiveness of PA system and of needs for capacity development to implement PoWPA
- addressing identified gaps and needs (mainly through fund-raising)
- development and implementation of sustainable financing plan for the PA system
- monitoring of implementation of the PoWPAs
- development and implementation of National Communication Strategy and Action Plan
- implementing urgent activities of the PoWPAs
Project Outcomes:
- National Coordination Committee established and running
- Legal and institutional gaps of the PAs system analyzed
- Management effectiveness of the PAs system assessed
- Capacity needs of the PAs system assessed
- Capacity development action plan developed
- PAs monitoring database established
- Communications strategy and action plan developed, implementation started
- Publications produced (CBD Action Guide on Implementation of the PoWPAs in Armenian, Map of PAs in Armenian and English, Calenndars 2009, etc.)
