On November 7, 2013 the awareness raising and educational event was organized by WWF Armenia targeted at forestry students and lecturers from Ijevan Branch of Yerevan State University. The aim of the event was to inform the audience about WWF Armenia forestry program, in particular the EU funded project Increasing the Resilience of Forest Ecosystems against Climate Change in the Southern Caucasus through Forest Transformation and WWF Switzerland funded project Forest Landscape Restoration in Northern Armenia as well as to show the pilot sites with field activities in the frames of both projects. The focus was on the role of forest transformation and forest rehabilitation in the context of climate change. The issues of biodiversity, “close to nature” forest stands, forest rehabilitation and restoration, short-term and long-term benefits to local communities and other related topics were covered.

The first part of the event was a presentation followed by discussions held in Ijevan Branch of Yerevan State University in Ijevan town and the second part was a field visit to two pilot sites in Lori marz. The first visited site (EU funded project) is located in Gugarq Forest Enterprise of “Hayantar” State Non-Commercial Organization. The second visited pilot site (WWF Switzerland funded project) is in the adjacent area of “Trchkan Waterfall” Nature Monument.

The event was attended by 33 participants from the University, “Hayantar” SNCO and WWF Armenia. Visibility packages produced in the frames of the EU funded forest transformation project (bag, note-book, pen, T-shirt, cap and cup) as well as other relevant publications produced in the frames of WWF Armenia previous forest projects were distributed to the event participants.

In the frames of the event WWF staff met with the Rector of the university Mr. Samvel Araqelyan to discuss the possibilities of further cooperation with the university in terms of involvement of students and lecturers in respective events and provision of relevant printed materials and publications to be used during the classes.

More information about WWF Armenia’s ongoing and completed forest projects can be found at the project section of the website.
