The US Ambassador to Armenia, H.E. Mr. John A. Heffern and his wife together with the Vice Consul, Mr. Miles C. Hansen, have visited in the Lake Arpi National Park as a tourist destination for bird watching.
They were received in the visitor center (Ghazanchi community) as well as in the headquarters of the National Park located (Berdashen community) near the lake. The visitors witnessed the progress that was made with support of WWF in terms of strengthening the conservation of this important area along with its unique biodiversity.

Their visit was followed by an excursion to several notable birding sites of the park such as the northern island of the Lake Arpi and the wetlands adjacent to the Lake Ardenis - the traditional breeding site of one of the rarest birds in Armenia - the Common Crane. Under the comprehensive guidance of the WWF experts and national park’s staff, the visitors managed to locate and observe the inhabitants of the Lake Arpi. Observation included various waterbirds such as Dalmatian Pelican, Greylag Goose and Ruddy Shelduck, which are regular breeders in the area, as well as one of the biggest world colonies of Armenian Gull. Meadows around the lake were holding Montagu’s harrier, Common Kestrel and spectacular European Roller.

Overall, the excursion resulted in almost 50 species of local bird fauna. The visitors were also being provided a detailed list of observed species and shared the guides, maps and information on bird trails of the area. Mr. and Mrs. Heffern were much satisfied with their leisure. They were looking forward to continuing their experience at the Lake Arpi National Park.
