On November 17 the representatives of Areni community of Vayots Dzor Marz and the employees of WWF-Armenia and Gnishik Protected Landscape planted trees near St. Astvatsatsin Church (built in 1321 by Momik) in Areni. The tree planting was organized within the framework of “Community-based Models for Biodiversity Protection in Ecological Corridors” project implemented by WWF-Armenia and the saplings were donated by Armenia Tree Project.

The newly planted trees will be watered using pre-installed drip irrigation system which ensures a more sustainable growth.

The tree planting plays great importance in the implementation of anti-erosion activities in the area. As a result of tree-planting 170 trees were planted including ash trees, Russian olives, smoke trees and Afghan Redbuds, which in addition to preventing erosion will also aesthetically improve the appearance of the area.
WWF emphasizes collaboration with adjacent communities of the protected areas, as well as promotes the development of environmental education.
