Mr Pérez is founder and CEO of Alternergy Partners, a power company focused on developing renewable power projects in emerging countries in Asia.

He is also Chairman of Merritt Partners, an energy advisory firm to companies doing business in Asia, and Chairman of WWF- Philippines.


Career Snapshot

Mr Perez had 17 years experience first in Latin America credit and debt restructuring at Mellon Bank in Pittsburgh, and later in debt trading, capital markets and private equity in emerging countries at Lazard in London, New York and Singapore.

From 1995 to 1997 he was Managing Director of Lazard Asia in Singapore. Following this Mr Pérez founded Next Century Partners, a private equity firm based in Singapore that invested in companies such as Smart Communications, Del Monte Pacific and Fastech.

In 2000 he went on to be the founder of Asian Conservation Company which acquired El Nido Resorts, an award-winning eco-tourism destination in Palawan.

He served briefly in early 2001 as Undersecretary for Industry at the Department of Trade and Industry and as Managing Head of the Board of Investments.

From 2001 to 2005, Mr Pérez was the youngest Philippine Energy Minister. During this time he boosted energy self-sufficiency, promoted clean indigenous energy, pursued energy diplomacy, and crafted an ambitious renewable energy policy framework.

Mr Pérez is a member of the advisory board of Coca Cola Philippines and the Center for Business and the Environment at Yale University and has consulted for ADB and IFC on renewable energy policy.

He was recently appointed as Vice Chairman of the National Renewable Energy Board.

Formal Education

Mr Pérez obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Economics from the University of Philippines in 1979, and an MBA from the Wharton Business School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1983.

He was a 2005 World Fellow at Yale University, where he lectured an MBA class on renewable power in emerging countries. 

He currently resides in Manila with his wife Leigh Talmage and enjoys diving and sailing. His book “Chasing Moonlight” commemorated his 50th birthday in 2008.
