Antony Burgmans is currently a non-executive board member of BP and a member of the Supervisory Boards of Akzo-Nobel, Aegon and SHV.
He is chairman of the supervisory boards of WWF-Netherlands, Mauritshuis (The Hague) and the Dutch National Opera (Amsterdam).
Mr. Burgmans was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands in 1947.
After his education he joined Unilever as a marketing trainee in 1972 where, over the course of his career, he was based in Rotterdam, London, Jakarta and Hamburg.
During the first 20 years he worked in marketing, sales and general management and became Chairman and CEO of Unilever in 1999.
In 2007 he received the United National Humanitarian of the Year Award and was Appointed Commander in the Order of Orange-Nassau. This was followed in 2009 with the Appointment as Honorary Knight Commander of the British Empire (KBE).
He retired in 2007.
Mr Burgmans received his education in the Netherlands in Business Administration and Sweden in Political Science. In 2005 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Lancaster in Lancashire UK.
Mr Burgmans enjoys opera, traditional and modern paintings, soccer, wildlife photography and travelling with his children.
