WWF US- Vice President, Animal Protein – 14028

World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the world’s leading conservation organization, seeks a Vice President, Animal Protein to oversee WWF’s work to measurably eliminate, reduce or mitigate the key threats caused by the single most significant driver of biodiversity loss globally, animal protein production. The VP, Animal Protein will be responsible for overall strategy development and delivery for WWF-US’ work on beef, dairy, aquaculture and other key animal proteins (e.g. poultry, eggs, pork) ; aligning WWF’s animal protein work with its work to reduce the impacts of producing feed for animals; building and managing a cross-functional, international team working towards a common vision and complementary objectives around animal protein issues; working with the SVP to engage key audiences along the animal protein value chain; and supporting and/or undertaking communications and fundraising efforts.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

 

1.Strategic vision: Leads the development of WWF-US’ overall animal protein strategy and works with various teams and departments within WWF-US to insure that its strategies are aligned. Works with the global WWF network to develop and implement strategies that will measurably reduce the impacts of animal-based protein production, including the production of feeds used. Develops and implements strategies to engage individual companies (producers, retailers, traders) as well as associations, multi-company platforms, and entire industries. Outlines long-term plans and strategies; proposes short, medium and long-term metrics of success and balances long-term needs with short-term demands in establishing priorities and deadlines. Links WWF-US’ work on animal protein to conservation priorities both within the US and globally. The incumbent must be based in Washington, DC.

 

2.Negotiations and partnering: Works closely with the SVP, Food and the VP, Private Sector Engagement and WWF’s global market transformation work (e.g. the Market Transformation Initiative) to develop far-reaching partnerships focused on improving practices along the animal protein supply chains to reduce key environment impacts. Engages with target companies as well as entire sectors. Ensures positive working alliances with various stakeholders.

 

3.Communications and fundraising: Serves as program champion and issue expert lead in the US and globally, as appropriate. Leads major fundraising efforts in conjunction with the SVP, Markets as well as appropriate Development staff. Accountable for developing and delivering annual fundraising goals and commitments. Engages policymakers and institutions in building public awareness and commitment as appropriate.

 

4. Team building and management: Builds and leads a team that manages WWF-US’s relationships with partners for our animal protein-based work. Leads the team to execute the strategy for engaging with particular institutions or sets of institutions. Sets goals and expectations, drives success, and measures and communicates progress on an ongoing basis. Creates opportunities for recognition and development. Provides feedback, counseling and coaching to staff in unit and beyond as appropriate.

 

5. Cross-cutting work and institutional learning: Helps develop and apply rigorous and appropriate metrics and other evaluation tools to measure progress and results. Contributes to internal learning and knowledge management by routinely and consistently sharing lessons learned and models of change.

 

Requirements

 

Education/Experience: A graduate degree in a relevant field is required; an MBA or other degree related to agribusiness or marketing is a plus. Candidates should have 15 years work experience in relevant area. Experience with international animal protein production and markets and food certification programs as well as continuous improvement is critical. Agribusiness management experience is essential to succeed in this position as is experience with program development, relevant animal protein policy issues, and ability to work with a range of stakeholders and partners to design and implement strategic, multi-dimensional and broad-reaching partnerships. Background working with governments, NGOs and other global organizations around agricultural issues is an advantage. Prior experience with public speaking is highly preferred.

 

Skills and Abilities

•Fluency in English required; other languages are a recognized asset.
•Strong written and verbal communication skills.
•Must be comfortable with all aspects of animal protein issues
•Excellent organizational skills with an emphasis on program and project management.
•A high level of interpersonal skills is required, especially relationship
management skills and the ability to work as part of a high-level international team.
•The ability to effectively prioritize and produce high-quality work under time constraints.
•National and international travel (up to 20%) required.
