WWF has been awarded a medal and certificate in recognition of its support for the South West Indian Ocean Fisheries Commission (SWIOFC) over a period of the last five years.  The award was received by WWF Coastal East Africa Initiative Head of Marine Programme, Domingos Gove, during the commemoration of the 10th anniversary of establishment of SWIOFC and the 7th Session of the commission held from 12-16 October, in Maputo (Mozambique).

Speaking upon receiving the award, Mr. Gove noted that the award is a true testament to the importance that WWF lays towards the conservation of dwindling marine resources.

“This award is for the whole WWF network for its tireless efforts to promote sustainable fisheries in our region along with helping to contribute towards the conservation of reducing marine resources. We are proud to be part of this larger team and to witness the region coming together to strengthen regional fisheries management to sustain increased food security and alleviation of poverty under SWIOFC, and support of other partners," said Domingos Gove.

During the same session, and for the first time since the establishment of the Commission, WWF proposed and secured the inclusion of a clause supporting the attendance of regional NGOs and or CSOs, as observers, in the meetings of the SWIOFC.  An additional amendment of SWIOFC rules and procedures also provides for the establishment of a trust fund to facilitate raising of money to better deliver its work of strengthening regional fisheries cooperation and development.
