Context

A growing number of consumers and retailers are clamouring for more responsibly-caught seafood. Clearly, this provides an incentive for fisheries to reduce bycatch and tangibly improve their practices.

By reducing bycatch and utilizing proven tools and Best Practices, fishing operations can embark on a programme of gradual improvement towards sustainability.

For both industrial and smaller-scale fisheries, the opportunity to advance Best Practices and discuss issues among peers will provide a good basis for improving sustainability and improve fisheries governance.

Aims of the CTFF

Gather approximately 100 regional stakeholders, especially local fishers and industry representatives, to identify strategies and models for effective local partnerships on bycatch mitigation and Best Practices adoption.

This will help fishers and seafood companies to improve the long-term viability of fishing communities and reduce impacts from fisheries in the region.

Who was the event for?

  • fisher folk representatives and leaders of fishing associations
  • processing company managers
  • export/buyer company managers
  • fisheries managers and gear technologists

Objectives

  1. Facilitate the sharing of information and experiences on bycatch reduction and Best Practices in the Coral Triangle and regional fisheries, identifying obstacles, key issues and priorities.
  2. Promote, and learn from, examples of industry-fisher folk partnerships on bycatch reduction, Best Practices and other examples of “continual improvement”.
  3. Expand collaborations in the region on fisheries improvement among supply chain actors.
  4. Develop a “road map” identifying relevant enabling policies and programmes and how fisher folks and industry players can help influence and implement these.
  5. Formally establish and endorse a Coral Triangle Fishers Forum as a platform for regional dialogue on sustainable fisheries that helps deliver on the goals of the Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) Regional Plan of Action.
