Impact assessments
Minimizing negative social and environmental impacts
WWF thinks an ESIA should be mandatory for all new mining facilities and associated infrastructure in areas of sensitive biodiversity.
All processes should be covered
The ESIA should cover all processes, starting with the exploration phase. ESIA should also be mandatory in the case of significant changes to operations at existing facilities.Environmental and social impact assessments should be undertaken according to the highest international standards. For this to happen, real, informed consultation with all stakeholders is essential.
To address this issue, WWF is taking the following actions:
-
Advocacy
-
Critical review
-
Work with companies
-
Capacity building
-
Independent advisory board
