What is the Heart of Borneo?
The Heart of Borneo covers 22 million ha of trans-boundary equatorial rainforest, including some of the most biologically diverse habitats on earth. This area provides many benefits to the businesses and communities of Borneo and to the wider world, from clean water supplies to carbon sequestration.
Pushing sustainability forward
Businesses operating in the area have already taken steps to locate and manage their operations more sustainably. For example, of the 8.6 million ha allocated in concessions within the Heart of Borneo, 8% of this area is already certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) standards, indicating that they are sustainably managed.
Despite the environmental, economic, and social value of the Heart of Borneo, it is coming under increasing pressure from a growing population and booming industry.
