The Ukrainian part of the Danube Delta is an acknowledged biodiversity centre, known to support more than 91 fish species, 256 bird species, 42 mammal, five reptile and 10 amphibian species.
Several endangered birds, such as the Dalmatian Pelican, Pygmy Cormorant, Ferruginous Duck, Red-breasted Goose and White-tailed Eagle roost and feed here.
The distinctive White Pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus) is synonymous with the Delta as the entire area supports 70% of the world’s population.
In addition to 950 higher plant species, the wetlands host 717 forms of planktonic one-celled algae and 277 aquatic invertebrates.
