Gornje Podunavlje Special Nature Reserve to be certified for sustainable tourism
As part of WWF’s "Dinaric Arc Parks" project 16 parks from the region became members of the Europark Federation. They are encouraged to apply for a certificate for sustainable tourism. Application process is extremely complex and requires a serious involvement of the park management.
"One of the most important steps in the nomination of the park for a certificate for sustainable tourism is to establish a forum involving all stakeholders and discuss the importance of tourism in the park", said Duska Dimovic, director of WWF's program in Serbia. "A common strategy for sustainable tourism should be completed, which is adapted to the objectives of the environmental protection within the park. Action plans should be prepared taking into account the riches and needs of the parks. These nominations are a testament for the quality of Serbian parks and hopefully some other parks will follow Gornje Podunavlje and Fruska Gora.
Participation in the certificate will enable the parks to diversify income and possibly increase revenues from tourism services.
Three other parks from Croatia and from Bosnia and Herzegovina have also applied for the certificate.
