Why did you go for FSC certification at Kosti?
It’s definitely a matter of prestige for a forestry management team to show that they can obtain an FSC certificate. At Kosti we always believed that we were managing the forests the right way, therefore the consistently good results. We went through the certification process mainly to make sure that we were managing the forests well in every single aspect, as well as to be the first forestry to go through certification. Naturally, we were also very much aware of the increased market opportunities to sell our product. But this was not the primary reason to go for FSC, it was an afterthought.
What difficulties did you encounter during the certification process?
There were quite a few difficulties. Like everything new, this was also greeted with certain skepticism and a feeling of uncertainty. We needed to do a lot of talking with our staff, the local people as well as our contractors. The certification meant that we had more rules and regulations to follow than before and we all had to take those into account. But we organized trainings for the stakeholders and this made a difference to everyone’s attitudes.
How did your staff react to the new requirements?
After we put aside the initial uncertainties about working according to the “new principles”, I don’t think our staff found their work much more different than before. On the contrary, it’s easier now, because our work is much better regulated.
How has Kosti forestry benefited in the long run?
We are rated much higher now. We get a lot more requests for our wood. Our team is much more professional than before, and they are much more aware of what is going on in the forestry.
