Mountain meadows in the Carpathian mountains of Romania or Slovakia; wetland meadows in the floodplains of the Danube River -- these are just two examples of the rich cultural landscapes that exist in the Danube-Carpathian region.
Such "High Nature Value Farmland" areas have been cultivated over centuries, creating rich habitats that are home to a wealth of plants and animals. But changing rural economies and land use are putting pressure on many of these areas.
