WWF's Arctic Home campaign welcomed in Serbia
The Arctic is one of the most important areas for keeping the Earth’s climate system stable and a key indicator of the state of global well-being. Major ecological changes are taking place there at a faster and more dramatic rate than anywhere else in the world. Warmer temperatures are rapidly melting summer sea ice, which will likely all but disappear within a generation. The survival of ice-dependent species like the polar bear hinges on our ability to protect their last viable habitats.
“The Arctic Home campaign in Serbia includes a climate change photo exhibition”, said Sonja Badjura of WWF in Serbia. “Our focus is on Special Nature Reserve Gornje Podunavlje. Produced in cooperation with The Coca-Cola Company and Canon, the exhibition demonstrates how climate change has affected endangered species from the area”.
An ecological footprint calculator is another part of the campaign and a starting point to educate people in Serbia about climate change and the need for daily action.
“Through this calculator we will show people how much they need to lower their footprint and fight climate change from the perspective of daily life, doing small things and changing habits to achieve such a big goal”, Badjura said.
One part of the event space for the campaign is set up as a living-room full of commonly used electric devices. Visitors are asked to imagine a situation where they have to leave their home in one minute, and are having to turn off all devices. As part of this installation, all visitors are also educated how to save energy when they are away from home.
“We also want to educate visitors about water footprint issues in Serbia and worldwide. This is closely connected to WWF and Coca-Cola activities in Serbia.”
As part of the campaign, WWF will also hold "The Best Green School Contest". Pupils and teachers will be invited to send their vision of how their school can become “green” and support the global fight against climate change.
