WWF praises Denmark for climate leadership
WWF has recognised as a Gift to the Earth the inspiring leadership and example set by Denmark to address climate change with its highly ambitious commitments to reduce carbon emissions, phase out fossil fuels, and switch to renewable energy. Presenting the award – WWF’s highest recognition for globally significant conservation achievement – to Danish Prime Minister Ms Thorning-Schmidt in October in Copenhagen at the Global Green Growth Forum, WWF International Director General Jim Leape said Denmark shows it is possible to develop a sustainable society with economic growth and human welfare. Denmark has committed to achieve 100% clean renewable energy by 2050 with coal phased out by 2030, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2020 compared to 1990 levels.
