What We Do

Already in the 1990s, the development community and national governments understood that economic and social development issues could not be seperated from environmental issues. Today, with the increasingly great environmental impact of ongoing population growth and consumption expectations, more than private sector standards and conventional environmental mainstreaming into sectoral programs and projects are needed. It requires concerted efforts to engage broader public policy debates, decision-making and institutional frameworks with the aim to redirect public and private sector resources toward more sustainable development pathways.

This is the focus of the MPO and we contribute to WWF’s mission through a range of activities across the policy advocacy and program implementation continuum, such as

  • providing technical backstopping to WWF global and field programs on interlinked development and environment issues (such as agriculture, forestry, fisheries, infrastructure and mining)
  • developing and promoting integrated approaches to development through institutional partnerships at global and regional scale and multi-sectoral dialogues
  • improving the policy debate and decision-making processes in support of sustainable development
