Engaging market leaders

Global production and trade in commodities like timber, beef and fish affect some of the most breathtaking and ecologically important places on the planet.

And around 500 companies control roughly 70 per cent of global markets for the commodities that have the most significant impacts.

If we can get a critical mass of these leading companies to pursue sustainability, while working with the public sector to shape regulation and policy in areas such banking and public procurement, we can change whole markets, making better production the norm.

Making the business case

By collaborating with business and showing that commodities can be produced at affordable cost with measurably reduced environmental impacts, and by creating a significant demand for such products, we can shift entire commodity markets towards greater sustainability, and deliver large-scale environmental and social benefits.

Companies engaging in better production can:
  • secure long-term supplies of raw materials and commodities
  • increase profits and shareholder value
  • mitigate business and reputational risks
  • strengthen brand and increase customer loyalty
  • gain a strong return on investment
