Xanterra Parks & Resorts

Xanterra Parks & Resorts is the largest park-management company in the United Sates. The company operates lodges, restaurants, and other concessions.

Xanterra committed to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 10% below 2000 levels by 2015. By the end of 2004, emissions reduced to 4.75% below 2000 levels. Its 2006 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions were 17% less than 2000 levels – well beyond its Climate Savers goal. This early success prompted Xanterra to establish an internal goal of a 30% reduction in GHG emissions by 2015.

Xanterra also created “Ecometrix,” explained on their website: “Xanterra has created what may be the tourism industry’s first environmental performance metrics, which we call Ecometrix. The company’s Ecometrix are defined using annual totals of resource consumption as well as total resources used, normalized for revenue or per room night (resources divided by total annual rooms occupied). The Ecometrix focus on those areas that are most significant and measurable to a high level of accuracy…”

Excluding hydroelectric power, Xanterra powers 11.5% of its overall operations and 18.5% of its National Park operations with renewable energy. Renewable energy use increased by more than a quarter in 2006-2007, with an increased contribution from a new on-site 1-MW photovoltaic electricity in the US Death Valley and Rocky Mountain National Parks.
