NSN pledged to cut absolute emissions from its base stations by 28%, and decrease energy consumption of its buildings by 6% before 2012. NSN will also increase the share of green energy in its global consumption (18% in 2008, 25% in 2009, and 50% in 2012). The result will be avoided emissions that amount to almost 2 million tonnes of CO2.
NSN joined Climate Savers in 2008. Together with WWF, the company will regularly evaluate its achievements towards the Climate Savers goals.
Base stations transmit signals to and from mobile and fixed phone networks, connecting them to the network operator. Energy consumption from NSN base stations is the company’s main indirect source of CO2 footprint. NSN will reduce base station-related emissions by making them more energy efficient, through investment in technology development.
All NSN’s new products are designed according to environmental requirements and Design for Environment guidelines. Through better system and product design, closer control of production processes and greater re-use and recycling of materials, they will help reduce the use of natural resources, materials and energy.
